Applied for a job at iNaturalist today. Maybe they will see that I have made a code contribution and want to talk. I spent a good bit of time on the questions they asked. I am not expecting a callback but it would be a nice surprise.

I’m working on a few GIS MOOCs from Esri. I’m going to try and start blogging a bit more again now that I will probably be spending more time indoors due to the decreasing frequency of my nature walks. I was thinking that I could try and post one thing I learn each day.

I’m reading The Ghosts of Evolution by Connie Barlow. It has been an interesting read so far. Its about evolutionary biology and the existence of anachronistic fruit that evolved alongside now extinct mega fauna. I’m told there is a section about my favorite native fruit tree (Asimina triloba) and am looking forward to coming across that.

One thing I learned today is how ArcGIS pro can incorporate imagery that is non-nadir or oblique (street level images for example). This is opposed to something like satellite images that are captured looking straight down at the earth’s surface more or less. The image metadata can be used to create a polygon layer to overlay on the base map that depicts the area of the earth surface captured by the image.

Breakfast at JJ’s in Mt. Washington with Joy. Skating with Sam at Olympia park. Quarter pipe is fun. Ride on grind is fun too. I have old lumber and could build something and add it to the mix. Katey brought coffee and donuts. Gwen had her first ride on a skateboard. Washington county agricultural fair in the evening with Sam, Katey, and Gwen. Fried food, games, and displays. I liked the baking, crops, and arts sections the most. The cows and goats were cool too. The area with the pigs did not smell good. It was a fun carnival vibe with a demolition derby. I kept thinking of the video for Gretel by Alex G.

There are a few months left in the landscaping season. I spent most of the day going through my documents on my cloud storage accounts. I cleared out a lot of old files. Also did maintenance on my desktop and laptop.

I’m getting ready to start job searching again. I’ll be seeking out programming jobs at the end of the fall. I compiled a good list of resources to help me study.

I am putting together an ebook library. I mostly am focusing on self-sufficiency, but also have a good collection of classics (fiction and non-fiction). It is an ongoing project. Hoping to see it grow into something bigger.

  • 2025 foraging

I’ve eaten 3 new types of fungi this year:

    • Craterellus fallax – Black trumpet
    • Stropharia rugosoannulata – Wine cap stropharia
    • Cantharellus lateritus – Smooth Chanterelle

My favorite has beenthe black trumpet. I tried the chanterelle about a half an hour before writing this. It was tasty but I only tried a small amount since it is my first time tasting them. I definitely noticed a fruity, apricot aroma when I smelled the fresh mushrooms. I checked for insect damage and had to sacrifice a few but threw the rest in a pan with some butter and sauted them.

I’m proud that we have been getting more adventurous with fungi. I’m probably close to 10 species that I have foraged in the wild and eaten.
